Kingston Creative Sets Downtown Kingston On Musical Fire | The Gleaner

Kingston Creative Sets Downtown Kingston On Musical Fire | The Gleaner
It was billed as a weekend of music, “a musical weekend like no other”, and in a significant way, Kingston Creative outdid itself. It delivered. On Friday, February 21, the ‘Kingston Creative Meet-up’ focused on the ‘Migration of the Music’ inside F & Downtown, at 107 Harbour Street. The link-up featured a panel discussion with music experts Earl Chinna Smith, Ewan Simpson, Herbie Miller, Nadine Sutherland, and Professor Deborah Hickling. In addition, eight genres of Jamaican music echoed from the mouths and instruments of DJ Fenix, live band Ozou’ne, and Pon fYaH. The ‘Meet Us on Beat Street’ portion took over the intersection of Charles and Orange streets. The segment, in keeping...

Rae Town Rebirth – Kingston Creative Community Tourism Thrust For Inner-cities | The Gleaner

Rae Town Rebirth – Kingston Creative Community Tourism Thrust For Inner-cities | The Gleaner
Rae Town, a historic inner-city community in east Kingston, is known the world over for the weekly sound-system dances and oldies sessions of yesteryear that unfolded on Rae Street for several years. Those sessions brought many people from all walks of life to the community that emerged in the 1860s. It was a vibrant place, immortalised in songs, such as A Boom She Boom’. Now, only the memories of the glory days are floating on the sea breeze. The parties are over. For many reasons, the speaker boxers have been silenced several years ago, and the place is now experiencing ...

‘Meet Us On Beat Street’ To Showcase Kingston’s Musical Heritage | The Gleaner
Kingston Creative has made it their life’s mission to “make downtown Kingston a vibrant centre for creatives and creative entrepreneurship in the Caribbean”. With that mantra in mind, and in recognition of Reggae Month, the group will be partnering with the Sounds and Pressure Foundation to host what they describe as a musical experience like no other. Dubbed ‘Meet Us on Beat Street’, the event is set for Sunday, February 24, and will see persons getting a cultural tour of the musical spots where some of Jamaica’s icons started their musical careers. According to organisers, the tour is set to begin on Orange Street, where some of Jamaica’s musical greats, including ...

For The Reckord:the National Gallery And Quilt Exploring New Spaces | The Gleaner
When it comes to the work of the National Gallery of Jamaica and Quilt Performing Arts, the use of space is crucial. Both entities are currently exploring the use of non-traditional spaces. This was explained to me by Quilt's founder and artistic director, Rayon McLean, and senior curator at the National Gallery Oneil Lawrence at the recent opening of the Gallery's current exhibition - Beyond Fashion. A performance by Quilt was part of the gallery's 'Last Sundays (of the month)' function....
