Saltfish & Soul: Celebrating Jamaica’s Culinary Culture

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Kingston Creative, in partnership with Norwegian Seafood, invites Jamaican artists to submit proposals for a large-scale mural to be located in Downtown Kingston at the intersection of Church Street and Water Lane. This mural will form part of the ongoing transformation of the Water Lane Art District and will contribute to the vibrant visual storytelling of Jamaica’s culture.

The selected mural will celebrate the richness of Jamaica’s culinary heritage, with a special emphasis on the role of saltfish as a central ingredient in the national identity and daily life of Jamaicans.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

The mural’s design should celebrate the Jamaican culinary scene and the spirit of communal dining, conveying that Jamaican food is far more than sustenance—it is culture, love, and the thread that binds communities together.

Artists are required to incorporate:

  • The National Dish (Ackee and Saltfish) as a central or symbolic element
  • The presence and cultural significance of saltfish within Jamaican cuisine

Designs are not limited to the national dish alone and may include a broader range of iconic Jamaican foods and culinary traditions such as street food culture, market scenes, family gatherings, and celebratory meals.

The composition should evoke:

  • Warmth – the comfort and familiarity of shared meals
  • Abundance – the richness and diversity of Jamaican cuisine
  • Togetherness – communal dining, intergenerational connection, and social life

Artists are encouraged to explore storytelling through:

  • Human interaction (families, vendors, cooks, diners)
  • Cultural rituals (preparation, serving, sharing of food)
  • Symbolism rooted in Jamaican heritage

VISUAL STYLE & PALETTE

All artistic styles are welcome, including realism, abstraction, surrealism, and contemporary or traditional Caribbean styles.

The overall palette should be inspired by Jamaica, drawing from:

  • Tropical produce (ackee, callaloo, peppers)

The final work should be visually striking, engaging, and suitable for a public, high-visibility urban arts space.
