Kingston Creative has spearheaded a landmark transformation of Downtown Kingston into Jamaica’s premier Art District. Since the project’s inception in 2017, more than 115 large-scale murals have been painted across key thoroughfares — each bringing history, heritage and hope to formerly underutilized walls and derelict spaces.

Every mural is crafted through a collaborative process that creates paid opportunities for artists, masons and local laborers who prep surfaces and ensure structural integrity.

By engaging two to four artists per wall—many drawn from nearby areas once designated as high-risk zones—these projects have created stable employment, built artistic capacity (60 percent of contributors have returned for multiple commissions) and fostered a Jamaica-first ethos that prioritizes homegrown talent over external imports.

Beyond beautification, the muralisation has reshaped perceptions of Downtown Kingston. Guided mural tours now invite residents and visitors alike to explore safe, walkable streets where once there was trepidation.

International brands such as PUMA have staged shoots amid the vibrant backdrops, and celebrities from Estelle, DJ Khaled, and Michael Johnson have shared their discoveries on social media—while on-site surveys report increased pedestrian traffic and renewed community pride.

What began as a grassroots movement in 2017 has blossomed into a world-class street art, showcasing both established masters and emerging talents in various corners of Downtown Kingston.
