If you’ve ever wandered through Downtown Kingston, you’ve likely admired the stunning murals in Water Lane that bring the city’s streets to life. These vibrant pieces of public art tell stories, celebrate culture, and contribute to employment and the revitalization of the community.
The first murals were commissioned by us independently, and then new murals were commissioned by the Government, through the KSAMC and the Tourism and Culture ministries. Recently international collaborations have blossomed, with the embassies of Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Germany, India and the UK all leaving their cultural mark on the city. Private Sector companies, foundations and even service clubs have also gotten into the act, with Rotary, Kiwanis, National Bakery Company, Red Stripe and other brands investing in legacy art projects in the Art District.
Now, here’s how your business or organization can also become part of this artistic movement by commissioning a mural through Kingston Creative.
Why Commission a Mural?
Public art is more than just decoration for Kingston’s streets, it attracts visitors, increases commerce, strengthens community identity and increases safety. By commissioning a mural, you’re investing in Kingston’s creative economy, as murals are painted by Jamaican artists. The stigma around Downtown Kingston is well known and this project is not only helping transform neglected areas into cultural tourism landmarks, but it’s transforming also how we see and experience Downtown Kingston.
Kingston Creative, an independent arts NGO founded in 2017, has been using art as a tool for social and economic transformation, engaging local communities and improving the city’s global brand.
How to Commission a Mural
Commissioning a mural through Kingston Creative is an easy process, with 7 simple steps. Here’s how it works:

- Select a Location – we can select one, or you can propose a location and the wall is measured.
- Sign a Fee Proposal – we prepare a costing and the client reviews and signs
- Launch an Open Call – we launch an online call for artists to submit designs.
- Choose your Artist – you select the design and artist for your project.
- Watch the Magic Happen – the mural gets painted in 3-4 weeks, and we handle all logistics, legal contracting and financial considerations.
- Celebrate Your Mural! – you can host a launch event, and a recognition plaque is installed.
Important Considerations
- Budget: Artist fees are priced at an average of $1,200 per square foot, ensuring fair compensation for artists and their team.
- Permissions: Whether the mural is on public or private property, appropriate permissions must be obtained and contracts signed with the land or building owner.
- Durability: High-quality, weather-resistant materials are used, along with a clear sealant, to ensure that murals remain vibrant for years.
- Community Engagement: Many murals in Kingston are co-created with local residents, fostering long-lasting connections and engagement.
- Murals in Other Locations: if you would like to commission a mural in a location other than Downtown Kingston, that is easy too! Just send us information on the location, photos and a wall measurement and no matter where in the country you are, we can support your vision.
