Windrush Portraits

Windrush Portraits‘ is a transatlantic artist collaboration highlighting the Windrush Generation across Kingston, Jamaica and Southampton, UK. This February, throughout Black History Month, Kingston Creative, Jamaica is partnering with UK organisations John Hansard Gallery, Black History Month South, and Southampton Black Archives to celebrate and commemorate the Windrush Generation and subsequent Windrush scandal with the first staging of a public art digital billboard exhibition nationwide in Jamaica, featuring current works by Jamaican artist Michael Elliott and UK artist Mary Evans.

The artists will subsequently undertake exchange visits to Southampton (October) and Kingston (July) to meet Caribbean communities in Southampton and Windrush returnees in Kingston. These visits will result in new artworks, developed in collaboration with the affected communities, that will be presented during October 2023 (Black History Month in the UK) in both Southampton, UK and Kingston, Jamaica as a continued public art exhibition.
