Route

1. Trench Town Culture Yard
2. Beat Street

Orange Street popularly known as Beat Street is where some of Jamaica’s musical greats got their start. It is the home of the original studios of  Lee Scratch Perry’s and Cecil ‘Prince Buster’ Campbel’s famous Record Shack and also home to Sir Coxsone Dodd’s legendary Studio One Records. Beautiful portraits decorate the street showing respect to the life and work of those who recorded here, including great Dennis Brown.

Still in operation on Beat Street is Small World RecordingStudio and Rockers International Record Store, still carrying on the legacy of Beat Street.

Located at 6 and 8 First street, what is known today  as Culture Yard, was originally  part of a housing scheme, popularly known as Government Yard, built in the 1940’s.

Here is where reggae legend Bob Marley grew up and one of the houses now serves as a museum which details a great history of Trench Town and musicians originated from there including Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. It was while living there in Trench Town that Bob and the Wailers were formed and wrote their first album ‘Catch a Fire’ The museum boasts articles and instruments once used by these icons. Culture Yard not only hosts this museum but souvenir shops and cafes.
