The Kingston Creative Hub was launched on July 26, 2020. Despite the onset of COVID-19 dampening the use of the physical space, multiple music, photographs, live-streaming and training events are happening in the space, and individuals are using the coworking and office facilities.
DBJ and TEF funding supported the training of creative entrepreneurs, furnishing of the space as well as the construction and equipping of meeting rooms, a podcast studio with the option of rented equipment and a digital film/photography studio.
The goal of the Creative Hub is to promote collaboration across the creative sector and catalyse growth in the creative economy. A collaborative space helps us to explore “Createch”; what happens at the intersection of creativity and technology. The Hub will focus on the impact that augmented reality, virtual reality, blockchain and other emerging digital technologies can have on the brand, culture and talent that exists in Jamaica.
The coworking space sits above F&B Downtown, a bar, restaurant and gallery space available on the ground floor at chic eatery F&B Downtown. Through a partnership with the Development Bank of Jamaica and JAMPRO, several programmes including B2B matchmaking sessions and an accelerator geared at creative entrepreneurs were hosted in the space in 2020.
Inclusion is a key success factor and residents of the Downtown area can access the Hub services at a 50% discount, in order to encourage use by creatives from the surrounding communities. The Kingston Creative Hub challenges the norm and provides an opportunity for increased collaboration, experimentation and creativity across social and industry divides. This new location offers more than a physical workspace, it is a network and a community that provides support for business development and community engagement within the creative, cultural and technology sectors.
