Title:  Art Beat (The Creative Hub)

Location: 107 Harbour Street, Downtown Kingston

Date: December 2019

Artists: Lisa Stiebel, Dan Thompson, Jeana Lindo, Nicolas Gabbidon, Ricardo Smith, David Francis, Leroy Francis, Avery Sparks

The location for this mural is in the middle of the core of the growing Downtown Kingston Art District. Being the home of one of Kingston’s oldest Jewellery stores (Swiss Stores), whose elegant interior renovation turned it into an attractive and popular bar and restaurant. This mural literally clothes this corner building in a fabric of colours, geometrical shapes and tropical flair. It draws attention from many angles and promises to become an iconic feature of the Downtown Kingston Art District.

The idea of mirroring the beautiful and historic black and white checker pattern sidewalk onto the ceiling of the long sidewalk created a very unusual and fun effect for all pedestrians. Iprint ( Signage company ) assisted with the printing of a vinyl application for this, releasing the stress from the artists to paint hundreds of black squares.

About the Artists
The mural was conceptualized and designed by Lisa Stiebel, with input from part sponsor iPrint. The architect from Barbados, now residing in Jamaica, has training in visual arts and loves geometry and architectural expression while painting. The supporting Jamaican artists Jeana Lindo and Dan Thompson both have extensive experience painting murals and gave their skill to creating this first of a kind building mural in Jamaica.

A team of experienced painters, Father and Son David and Leroy Francis from Spanish Town, Nicolas Gabiddon and Ricardo Smith from Denham Town have painted murals before and love the Arts. Avery Sparks supported the team with his sign painting skill by creating huge branding lettering..

Artist Statement
“Downtown Kingston is a fascinating place with one of the best urban designs a city could hope for. Happy to be a part of the Kingston Creative team and the efforts to bring more life and colour to its streets. The F & B Building is a great palette with its fusion of external historical significance and modern, creative interior decor. The design concept for the mural is based on the watch wheel to represent the foundation use of the Swiss Store. It is a play of angles representing the movement of the wheel through time and generations, with whimsical representation of the Jamaican landscape and colours: the architecture, ocean, food and drink, flora, sun and setting skies. “
– Lisa Stibel, Lead Artist

The Sponsors:
The Tourism Enhancement Fund, iPrint, and Sherwin Williams along with the assistance by the building owners, Kingston Creative was able to finance this large project of wrapping an ageing building with art.
